Nyabhagam varudhe..

Yesterday was second day of "Margazhi" month and Vaikunta Ekadasi had come much earlier this year. It was nice to wake up early in the morning yesterday and go along with my old flat friend L (just like old college days) to "Sathyanarayana temple" in W.Mambalam. We went to have darshan of Lord Vishnu on a beautiful rainy day! I was happy to have a long chat & walk with L after a long time.

I was reminded of the college days- when we used to get up and go as early as 5 am in the morning to beat the crowd to the temple. We would end up waiting in a long queue till the next street of the temple to have "Vaikunda Ekadasi" swami darshan . This year after almost 10 years, we had gone for Vaikunda Ekadasi. I guess due to rain, there was hardly any crowd while we went in the morning aroun 7am! We were able to peacefully recite "Vishnu sahasarnamam" in the temple premises.

During school/college days, many years, myself and L would want to keep ourselves awake during "Vaikunta Ekadasi" night. We normally try to read in the terrace of our building late evenings. We had made permanent provisions by having a tubelight, enough chair/tables in the terrace. But, unusually we would not even be able to be awake till 11pm on "Vaikunta Ekadasi" night alone! Our eyes would automaticaly close and eventually we would yield to "nithra devi".

Mumbai trip..

To wakeup in a chill morning -to stare at the window with a cup of chai - to see beautiful sunflowers blooming-all while in a running Chennai mail train -was just awesome!! The December weather was perfect to travel 1 whole day in a second class train from Chennai to Mumbai. We made last minute second class Tatkal reservations to meet our nephew and co-sister, who had come down from US.
I dont know whats with train journey and food. We tend to feel hungry and feel like snacking all the time ! I had packed enough food and snacks from Chennai to munch along with card games, melodious ipod music and reading sessions for the train journey. We got good "Vada Pav" in Sholapur station for evening snack.
Had a good time with my inlaws, co-sister and nephew on our short trip to Mumbai. Did manage to do some shopping as well. The mumbai city continues to amaze with so many people moving in everyday to this city, still managing to find some means of livelihood in the city.
Bhooma devi has been considerate to provide good perennial water supply to the ever growing population of the city.
Given a choice, would I want to live in Mumbai-the answer is probably a "No" mainly for the mode of commute and housing options. Though the train is the fastest mode of transport, I am somehow scared to go by them especially close to peak hours timeframes! The rentals are high close to the office locations and hence people end up staying far off locations and commute more than hour and a half one way for work! I find that difficult to accept!

Chocolate Krishna

Till yesterday, I thought the ocean and the sky were the few creations that make us look like mere mortals and bring us down to earth. All the feelings of discontent with achievements in life were shaken during my visit to a play organised to support a social organization “Amar Seva Sang” this weekend. I was very sceptical on that day to go for Tamil Play (Chocolate Krishna by the Crazy Mohan Group) as I was not sure if I would enjoy theatre.

As soon as i reached the venue and being greeted by Mr Ramakrishnan himself, the founding member of this organization who I have met earlier as well during the year, made all my apprehensions for the upcoming event disappear.

The Sangam, established by S.Ramakrishnan with a few friends in 1981, the International Year of the disabled, was registered under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act, 1975 Cer. No. TSI 16/1981.The Founder became a Quadriplegic in 1975 when he was in the fourth year Engineering, following an accident he met with while attending the interview for Naval Officers' selection.. After intense self- rehabilitation, he wanted to serve the society and spend his remaining life meaningfully, resulting in the birth of AMAR SEVA SANGAM, named after his Doctor Air Marshall Amarjit Singh Chahal.

In the year 1992 a young Professional Accountant S. Sankara Raman, affected by Muscular Dystrophy and a Wheel Chair user, left his lucrative practice at Chennai, and joined Ramakrishnan with a dream to build a Valley for the disabled.Their vision is to make Amar Seva Sangam a model centre catering to all the needs of the disabled.

The organisation, started with just a handful of children, has grown into an Institution of significant social relevance rendering immeasurable services to thousands of needy disabled. Dedicated staff and volunteers ably assist President Ramakrishnan and Hony.Secretary Sankara Raman.

If meeting him alone had this effect, I was not aware at that time that I would experience something which would make me think hard and deeply about my outlook towards life and everyone around it. We were treated to some spell bounding performance from the inmates of the Sang, and i watched the program crying all the way.

The dance program that was presented was done by a group of 5 people, 1 gentleman (who has aritificial legs) and 4 kids (2 of them who only had one hand!). They were enjoying the moment so much and performing with such confidence made me think what were we complaining about when almighty has been so kind and considerate with us to let us live a life without any physical deformities. I would like to stress here at no point I had any feeling of pity or remorse to see the inmates in their current condition. The only emotion i had was an overwhelming sense of appreciation of how they took to life and were looking to make the best of the given opportunity.

The evening might have ended with me enjoying the Play (call it momentary pleasure or happiness), but it left such a lasting impression on me that I find it difficult to express if i should feel happy about the fact I’m lucky to be able bodied or feel that i not have achieved enough compared to the “differently abled” inmates of the Sang who went to make life beautiful that what it offered them!

Regards
SG and Shuba
Please visit Amar Seva Sangam for further details on the Sangam and if you wish to contribute to this noble cause.

Endhiran – Sujatha is great

I have seen the most hyped Tamil movie of this year. According to me, it has definitely matched the hype!
I should definitely say that Shankar and the entire team has given us a good technically sound film, with lot of graphics in comparable to a hollywood movie.
My thought is that because of leading star cast( “Rajini” and “Ishwarya Rai”) popularity among national and international audience, such a good storyline and technically sound film has got a BIG hit in BOX OFFICE!
I liked the message at the end of the movie. Much needed for all of us.
I am not giving more information about the movie, as there might be more of you who would not have seen the movie as yet.

Sujatha(Late) could have got a much more credit for the amazing storyline of “Endhiran”.

Vazhaipoo special.

Am back after more than a month of absence from my blog space! A lot of things have happenend the last few weeks! But, I am much more energized after this break! I have been able to kinda of set things in order in both my personal and office front. I get enough "my" time these days to pamper myself with afternoon naps, meditation, peaceful beach walks, relaxed shopping etc...(at the cost of S working hard ;)

I have been religiously trying for the past few weeks to include lots of vegetables and fruits in my diet(which was kinda of lacking for the last few months) to get back my Iron levels and overall for a better health of mine.

Here goes the delicious vazhaipoo receipes (kootu & usuli) which I generally dont make considering the time and effort involved to prepare the same.

What a beautiful creation of GOD to hide the tiny yellow flowers of banana inside a bright wine red covering. The main trick to be able to cut the banana flower is after removing the white stigma("kallan" in tamil). Use your hand and hold a few banana flower and shake them at the end against your palm, you will be able spot the white stigmas. Once you remove that, you will be able to cut the flower. You need to soak the cut flowers in butter milk so that the color of the flower doesnt change. If you have not removed the stigma, you will not be able to cut using knife. So, thats the quality checkpoint for beginners ;)

The quantity you will get for 1 medium sized banana flower bunch can be used to make both kootu and usuli curry for 3 people. Its so cheap and very healthy too!!!

Vazhaipoo kootu(my mother's style) :

1)Steam cook the cut Vazhaipoo in cooker in a container without water.

2)Steam cook 1 handful of toor dhal in cooker.

3) In sunflower oil, fry coriander seeds(3/4 handful), white urad dhal(1/2 handful), channa dhal(1/4 handful), red chilly(4-5, depending on the spice), hing powder.

4) Grind the step 3 mixture along with 1/4-1/2 of cocunut shell.

5) In a kadai, add oil, splutter mustard seeds, add the cooked vazhaipoo, grinded spice mixture and add salt, turmeric. Let the spices get blended with the vazhaipoo. Then, at the end , add the steamed toor dhal and allow to boil for few minutes , garnish with curry leaves.

Vazhaipoo usuli:

1)Soak toor dhal(2 handful), channadhal(1 handful) for about an hour or so.

2)Steam cook vazhaipoo as above for kootu.

3) Grind the soaked dhal mixture (step 1), 1 red chilli, 1 green chilli, salt, hing powder into a course paste (dont add water while grinding).

4) Steam the grinded dhal mixture(step 3) after making patties shape in idly pan and allow it to cool.

5) Using your hands, crush the step 4 steamed dhal mixture.

6) In a kadai, splutter mustard seeds, add urad dhal/channa dhal and wait it changes to slight brown color, now add the step 5 dhal mixture and fry it till in becomes a little crunchy.

7) Add the cooked vazhaipoo to step 6 mixture and mix well, add salt. Allow the flavours to get blended for a few minutes. Season with coriander and curry leaves.

Eggless cake!!!

I had really been sleeping the whole of this morning and resting to ensure my eyes are getting good rest!! I was in a mood to have hot phulkas today.I didnt even try to make lunch for the afternoon. There has been a newly opened north indian restaurant in the next street to our flat. S was kind enough to go and pick parcel for both of us for this afternoon. The thali quantity was too much! The phulkas are too good , but I didnt like their sabji that much! I feel I will make better than them..(am i thinking tooo high of myself in cooking ;))
As I again tried to sleep after the heavy thali , I was disturbed by a call from credit card marketing woman! I was soo irritated to be disturbed everyday with a call from the same bank!!
As I could not sleep further, I decided to try something to bake for us after loooong gap! Was a little concerned if the heat of the oven is good for my eyes at the current condition! I went through the dozen of eggless cake receipes posted my favorite food bloggers. One or the other ingredient was not be there and I had to drop the receipe. Finally, I found an eggless, dryfruit cake at CookatEase.

I had got the baking tray from my friend looooonnggg back for trial before I buy one! Finally, I put that into use..
As I was not sure on the tin size of the baking tray, I tried only half of the receipe above. Also, as per her notes in the receipe, I used powdered sugar instead of condensed milk. I felt the sweet to be on the higher side(may be will be fine for S!)
I ended up getting something like a short bread instead of cake, as the quantity was too small for the tin size! I would say for the first try the cake aka short bread, turned out to be fine. I was not very clear on the last instruction on cooling though. The post mentioned that I need to cool it in a plate, after removing it from the baking tin. I did the same, while the cake was still hot! So, what happened was the side on the tray side, was a little soggy and didnt dry at all. It was like a moist cake ;) It was actually very soft.
I waited patiently for sometime for S to get up from his unusual afternoon nap to get to taste the cake with tea. But, today he is sleeping for looooooooong!! :( I could not wait to share this with someone!Hence, this post :)

Dream or Reality?

We went for a night show fpr "INCEPTION" movie with my friend and family around two weeks back.

I got up the next day morning and complained of blurring of vision~

I went to to our family doctor and he seemed to be more concerned than I was. He referred me to an eye specialist. They did couple of eye examinations and felt that I would require much more specialised place to treat the same!

With the kind gesture of the doctors referred above, I somehow managed to get an appointment to the famous "ShankarNethralaya" with another eye specialist.

By then a week had passed and there has been further deterioration in my eye sight!

Myself and S were very much impressed with the organised procedures and process in ShankarNethralaya . There are series of tests conducted by different types of eye physicians in that hospital at a very subsidized cost as well. Finally, we met a cute, young doctor , who further did a round of examination. She made me feel really comfortable and not worry about my deteriorating vision with her soft voice and smiling face!! We thought , this young cute doctor to be the specialist whom I was supposed to meet. It turned out that she is her assistant ;)

Finally, we spent the whole day doing one test after the other and meeting another senior eye surgeon! He made the following statement" Your vision will not go away!". It sounded very blunt to me! But, what he was trying to refer was I could have a much serious problem of type of blood disorder which could have caused heomorrage in my eyes , which has in turn resulted in the blurring of vision. It seems the bleeding within the eye will stop on its own and my vision will eventually become normal.

That was end of another llooooooooooooonnng day(Friday).

For the first time, I felt why weekend came! My blood reports and doctor wont not be available during the weekend. I will need to wait for another 2 more days to know whats my health condition going to be!

My mood was sooo down that I pestered S to take me around for some shopping inspite of S kidding that I might not be able to differentiate the colors well ;) As usual, I ended up buying more than what I planned for!

It was monday afternoon and we went to ShankarNethralaya thinking that I could have a serious health problem!

All of sudden, my luck and HE were with me that all my reports turned out to be very normal!!

It really puzzled my doctors as well . They asked me not to worry about the cause of this internal bleeding in my eyes.

This is not a dream --- Its a reality which I had to go through for the last 2 weeks!

The positive outcome or thought process in my mind now is that I have decided that my to-be-conceived daughter will have to become an eye doctor. I always thought doctor profession to be a very demanding. They will have to struggle to get a balanced personal life. That is not the case with eye profession. Having visited ShankarNethralaya and talking to the doctors, I understand that there are so much of inter connectivity of eyes with other parts, that any other malfunction in the body, can be first seen as a symptom in the eye! The inspiration for this thought process has been the cute, smiling assistant doctor whom I met. I want a girl just like her :)

Unexpected Birthday Gift!

It was 8:30pm in the night of my birthday and Ramakrishnan Sir (President-founder of Amar Seva Sangam) was going to a music concert as part of a coutrallam tourism development initiative. Sir wanted to go there to show his gratitude to GangaiAmaran. He along with SPB had helped on another occasion, to conduct a fund raising music programme for ASSA. We had gone to meet Sir that evening. My father was busy with his training programme for the local school students and we were also in the hall watching the enthusiasm of the students during father’s programme. Sir suddently called over phone and asked if myself and S wanted to join him for the music concert! I didn’t know how to react! S was blank because he was not even aware of who GangaiAmaran was!

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised to see and hear a live concert of “Gangai-amaran” (Illayaraja’s younger brother) in the final day of “Saral thiruvizha” of Coutrallam. We got to see the local VIPs like Tirunelveli MLA, Tenkasi MLA, Tirunelveli District collector in close proximity! We were let in near to the front stage, when a crowd of close to 2000 people, were waiting behind of the hall (all bcoz we had gone with Sir). As we looked odd man out of that crowd, even the district collector asked us if we had come to collect some prize for competitions conducted as part of the tourism development during coutrallam season!! ;)

I shalll write more about the simple man Mr.Ramakrishnan and about his life changing event and our experiences in ASSA in my coming posts..

Live to Serve..

Followed to the fullest by all people associated with Amar Seva Sangam Association, is the motto of the NGO. My father had gone there to conduct free motivational training programmes for the employees of ASSA. So, we got a chance to spend 3 days in their premises as a guest. It’s a much calm place with ample of space, surrounded by lot of trees, good wind and good souls! I had heard a lot about Mr.Ramakrishnan, founder of ASSA through my father. We got a chance to meet him in person and understand the real service done by him this time! A little background about Mr. Ramakrishnan sir. He was studying engineering final year in 1976. He had an amibition to enter into army. He had gone for the army examination and as part of the test process had to jump from a huge height and unfortunately met with a major accident leading to complete paralysis of his body below neck! He required help of others for every little movement.
The below information is an excerpt from their annual magazine. This is a benediction from Bharat Ratna Late Shri. C. Subramaniam, first patron-in-chief of ASSA.

In 1981, he had the courage of conviction, injected and inspired by his mentor Dr.Amar Singh, and dared to establish a service organization and christened it as AMAR SEVA SANGAM by way of paying his humble but sincere gratitude and tribute to the doctor who has helped him out of the jaws of death during the accident in army tests!

Interestingly another crippled young man, Sankara Raman, Chartered accountant with a sizeable practice of his own in Madras, who happened to visit Ayikudy in January 1992, out of curiosity to see for himself what Ramakrishnan was doing there, lost no time in bidding good bye to his lucrative auditing practice and settled down in Ayikudy to help and work with Ramakrishnan. “
It was so motivating to see both these inspiring people in person and get to have a chat with them.
We wanted to see if we could also contribute to the ASSA through our educational background! As my husband was a finance background, he tried to understand their financial operations and tried to suggest some modifications during our short visit! I tried to understand the IT system. There needs lot of knowledgeable people& machines in networking to run the huge system in ASSA currently. I got to meet another young gentle man called Rajesh. He is currently looking after the IT system. He is also physically challenged and has no movement below his neck! I was very happy to see the confidence with which he spoke and didn’t show a bit of frustration over his current condition! I was very much moved to talk to such people! He has learnt software languages out of his own interest and is not a professional qualified person! They need a little bit of guidance to channelize the IT packages which they are developing for ASSA. I am not a trained in that area to support the same! I have tried to source a upcoming networking professional from Chennai to look their IT related issues and sort out their issues and help to improve their IT infrastructure for smooth running of ASSA. There is a need donations and knowledge youngsters for ensuring the smooth running of these systems!

We are trying to see if we can spread out this message about ASSA to more people to help to collect donations & qualified volunteers for a certain commited time !

I have to definitely mention about “Muthamma” aunty. We used to go there to the “Barrier free dining hall” for our lunch and dinner. We got to see many “special children” taken care so well by the staff there for serving food. Muthamma aunty has been in ASSA for the last 8 years in the kitchen session! She has an ever smiling face and serves food to all of the guests who come there!!

There are a few lessons learnt from this trip

I realized that I should not crib about the small health issues which I have! I can still move around, work and contribute monetarily to my family and society! It made me realize that there is more scope for social responsibility from my end and I should not just get constrained to my family alone!!

Unplugged

For those who have been wondering for the long silence from my end in responding to your personal wishes for my birthday –I had been completely cut-off from all communication mediums like internet, mobile network connectivity, paper , TV etc for the last 4 days.

I have been on a 4 days vacation to places in and around Tenkasi, Tamilnadu. Most of the events I had encountered on my vacation - have lot of pleasant surprises, fun, learning.

Now- I would have to get back to reality and catch up with all the piled-up pending tasks at home and office.

I will catch up soon on trying to capture my rejuvenating trip in detail.

PTA –in real spirit

I have somehow missed this post .Its been there in my draft for so long. rather its going to almost a year now!!

I happened to be part of a different type of parents –teachers meeting in Ayakudi - a small village near Tenkasi, Down south of Tamilnadu.

As part of Subramanya Trust run my Mr.Ramakrishnan Sir, this is mainly concentrating on trying to improve the education standards of the children of the neighbourhood of Ayakudi. Ramakrishnan Sir had called all the parents of the students associated with the tuition center (on a late evening). In spite of his physically challenged condition, he made sure he was present for the meeting. Actually, only 50% of the parents had turned up for the meeting. The teachers of the tuition centers were all studying in colleges and doing this as a part-time work for a small amount of stipend for the same!

The children were not from a single school. They were studying in different schools in the neighbourhood. He remembered every single child’s name and called them out one by one. He told the child’s parent on their educational progress and their regularity in attending tuition. It was very much an unbiased opinion and straight to the face! As my father had conducted free personality development training programs for those children during our 4 day trip, we 3 of us were also invited by Ramakrishnann Sir. (something like a chief guest ;)). I was suddently asked by Ramakrishnan Sir to say something to those students & parents group! I was pleasantly surprised and was speechless! I just spoke few words to wish them to study well!!

My memory went back to the parents teachers meeting in my school. I had studied in SPIC township, Tuticorin till my secondary school. As it was a township, we mostly knew all our classmates family as well. It’s a fanfare event for the parents to meet the teachers in our school. Many aunties would come with newly bought sarees and jewellery for such meetings. They will try to use high language and try to talk for long with the teacher. It would be partially about their child and more of general gossip.

NRI to R2I

Time is running soo fast- It’s been a year today since we shifted back to India. I can call myself a happy R2I(!?)
It would not be fair if I say my transition phase of R2I was very good! I did have my own round of cribbing after moving back. I still find that I do make references of people, place and atmosphere which I liked about sophisticated Singapore to my known circle here!! I feel I make references, hoping some day our India will also learn and adopt the good things from other foreign countries.
I will want to recollect about some of my memories as NRI during my stint of close to 3 years in Singapore.
The first thing I remember about Singapore is the building we lived-Grandeur8 condo. It was a well maintained complex and we got a beautiful pool facing ground floor flat with a BIG patio!! I used to love staring the well maintained pool with a hot cup of tea early in the morning. I feel Grandeur8 really helped us to unwind and relax amidst the hectic lifestyle we had. We learnt swimming and tennis there as well. I wish I could start getting back to the routine of swimming. I have been a little lazy and not gone to explore one around my neighbourhood in Chennai. That’s been a looong pending item from my end.
Next thing which I remember is the bus service. Myself and S would love to go on a long travel by local bus. I would get undivided attention from my better half [without any other gadget distractions]. Half of our important conversations would happen in the bus.
I also agree with most R2I people’s opinion that we tend to watch more of our own mother tongue movies abroad than we do in India. It was quite easy to get tickets and we did watch of lot of tamil /hindi movies. Within walking distance from our apartment, we had a theatre which filmed English movies. So, we ended up watching more English movies as well.
I guess food and me go together. I love food and that too authentic Indian food are my all time favorite! We had lots of small joints in and around Little India like Gangothree, Murugan Idli Kadai etc, which we used to frequently visit. I have to say about the Yishun Mariyamman koil and a small food joint behind the temple premises! Food is dead cheap there and I like to sit down on the floor and eat there. Sometimes, I have my own doubts if I go there for temple or for food! The place my office was located had no good Indian food options. Back those days I was a lazy bun to get up and cook early in the mornings! I developed good rapport in office with many Indian colleagues because of Annalakshmi. Many Indian colleagues of different department knew me for the simple reason that I helped to order Indian food from Annalakshmi for many in my office! ;)
I learnt to appreciate the importance of domestic helpers, which we very much take for granted in India. In India, we have the luxury of having helpers clean our entire house, wash utensils for all 7 days of the week and still pay them a very meagre amount(still crib if she doesn’t turn up even for one day!!)

Developed a few close friends as well and learnt a lot culturally from my colleagues.

Given a chance will we want to go out of India again? I would say time alone will answer this question - As one part of the heart wants to remain in Chennai as I am slowly settling down here, while the other part of the heart wants to explore or test new waters!

Circle of life!

One of my close pals since last 8 years, who had also rejoined my old company is leaving this place for better career prospects. I feel happy for her transition. In as much I know, she is just a call away and going to be in the same city as me, I will definitely miss her for the instant communicator, tea & lunch table chats we used to have! :(

"To meet to part is the way of life and to part to meet is the hope of life."

Wishing her all the very best in every walk of her life

Kitty parties..

This post is based on Usha Suryamani’s post on similar lines and a recent office get together we had.
Offices or rather IT & ITES offices(I know of) have the funda of celebrating the birthday’s of their team members. It’s considered to be a MNC culture to celebrate the employees birthdays!! I think this attitude is fastly getting down these days even to our Indian public sector banks, government offices…

A typical IT office team get-together.

Entire team would assemble in a training rooms(ironical -for birthday celebrations!) and one of the birthday bakkaras of the month would cut the cake on everyone’s behalf! Followed by, a cake & snack distribution ceremony by few ladies (or rather responsible aunties) of the team.

It’s followed by a gift voucher distribution from the manager to the birthday babies(that’s how they are called!) of the month. The gift vouchers would be from leading shopping or chain stores in the city! The birthday babies will collect the vouchers as a present! (The voucher has come from their pockets?!)

They will need to allocate time to go and redeem the voucher in the stipulated stores irrespective of whether they want to buy something or not! Otherwise the voucher will expire!! They would eventually end up spending more than the voucher amount!

It’s considered fun to have high calorie food at office get-togethers as its celebration of your department member’s birthday party!!

If we consider the average money collected per person per month is around 100Rs. So, for a team of around 30 members, the money would come to app around 40K per year!

If we extrapolate the same to the entire organization – Would it not be sufficient to educate few kids or provide for feeding for an orphanage for a few days?

During the initial few years in office, we did have a similar type arrangement within few of our closed friends! As it’s considered a collective gift, we would all meet up on a weekend. We would go to most expensive designer wear saree shops in Chennai and buy clothes for our respective birthdays! Down the line, one of our friends enlightened us that this practice is a sheer waste of money and we stopped this practise for the good!

Kumbakonam weekend trip.

Last weekend was hectic but good - as we had covered 21 temples in a span of 2.5days!! We had amazing energy levels during this trip. Currently, I am back from the trip and my stomach is not OK. This is because of some over-eating I did during this trip. I sometimes try to be on par with S and eat more than what I am capable of and end up with such issues!!

We had a good peaceful Dharshan in all temples. We were able to do archana and special pooja’s as told for us by our family astrologer.

The list of temples visited in the order with the day and timings. This might help for anyone who is intending to visit these temples.

Friday(morning 10am to 1pm)

1) Thirukarukavur (Garbaga rakshambigai temple).
Visit the temple link to get to know more details on the significance of this place.

2) Thingalur (Navagraha temple - Moon-Chandran)

3) Swami malai(Murugan – one of the arupadai veedu). We got to see a beautiful abishegam(milk/sandhana) of lord Muruga.

Friday (evening 4pm to 8pm)

4) ThirumangalaKudi (Prananadeswarar/Mangalambikai temple.) To know more about the sthala puranam of this place, visit the link here.
5) Suriyanar koil(Navagraha temple-Sun-Suriyan)
6) Kanjanur (Navagraha temple- Venus- Sukiran)
7) Kozhikuthi(Vanmutti perumal)
This temple was suggested by our cab driver only. He was very patient with us. We took lot of time in all the temples. I will first try to read the sthala puranam and will translate the same to S as well. We would do a slow darshan.

8) Vaitheeswaran koil (Our family deity , Navagraha temple-Mars-Chevvai-Angarahan)
We did archanai for Vaitheeswaran , Thaiyalnayaki, SelvaMuthukumaraswamy & Angarahan)

Saturday (morning 7am to 8pm)
9) Thirunageswaram (Navagraha temple- Raaghu)
10) Thirumeeyachur (Lalithambigai)

I have been thinking for a long time to learn to recite Lalitha sahasranam. I hope the visit to this place, helps me to make an attempt to start the same!
11) Poonthootam (Koothanur –Saraswathi).

I got a tamil alphabets book for S here! I did start teaching him with the 12 uyir ezhuthu. I hope “Sarawathi” blesses him to read and write Tamizh soon! :)

He is able to identify the alphabets which I have taught him so far! He is doing better. ;). Long way to go though. Lord give me the patience to teach him .

It’s believed that kids who write their names and pray to goddess are blessed with good education. I could see lots of kids having written their exam numbers and names in the temple boards . :) I have prayed for a good education for some of the small kids I know of.

12) Thirunallaru (Navagraha temple- Saturn-Saneeswaran)

We got a beautiful darshan of Lord Saturn and able to see “Thailabhisegam”(sesame oil bath), on an auspicious day(Saturday) for Saneeswara Bahgawan.

13) Keezhaperumpallam (Navagraha temple- Kedhu)

14) Thiruvengadu(Navagraha temple-Mercury-Buddhan)

15) ThiruBhuvanam (Sarabeswarar temple)
16) Alangudi (Navagraha temple-Jupiter-Guru)

Sunday(10am to 12pm)

As we stayed in temple city, kumbakonam, we visited the famous temples of Adi Kumbeswerar, Chakrapani temple, Ramaswami Temple, Nageswarar temple.

We got a good auto driver in the temple city to do our local temple visits. One of the temple suggested by him was Karuvalarcheri. This temple is meant to help couples to be blessed with a child. The goddess Akilandeswari is believed to protect the foetus and help for a safer pregnancy.

We sincerely prayed in these temples for a “Santhana Bhagyam” for myself and S. I still need to improve my confidence level in believing that I will be able to have a healthy pregnancy!

There are some temples which are being maintained with lot of difficulties(less patronage). I find that some temples have got very much commercialized!

I feel its better we do a little bit of planning like getting our own OIL and lamps (deepam) to light in the temples. Also, we can buy blouse bits(different colors) for different navagraha swamy earlier itself and take it to the temples. We can buy deepam oil packets for the temple we visit. We did do that for most of the temples we visited this time.

Some places which I would suggest for good coffee/snack is “Seetharama Vilas”, Aduthurai. This place is a very very small place with serves good filter coffee! I had a good lunch in “Ambal mess” in a small village on the way from Thirunallaru to Mayiladuthurai”. I literally hogged their meals as I had not had proper food since Saturday morning. I forgot the name of the village now! I find that in most of the hotels in and around kumbakonam , everyone is supposed to dispose their own Banana leaf plate!(dignity of labour).

Coool-oru.doc

I am little late to write about the recent weekend Bengalooru trip . I am visiting that city after 3+ years.

I felt like I am in a hill station after experiencing hot summers in Chennai!

I had nostalgic memories about that city. That’s the place where I started my married life! I felt nice to see the areas I am familiar, when my husband’s friend drove us around on his SX4 on a peak weekend traffic! I had hated the city those days for the traffic! I still find that the traffic situations have not improved much.

We visited lot of friends and relatives during our short 2 day trip! It was fun. We were also able to spend good time in the marriage of our close Kannadiga friend. I liked the attention we got being bridegroom’s close friends. :)

We always have a feeling that Bangalore cost of living is more than Chennai. But, to the contrary I felt out that some things are really cheap there. Food and juices are very cheap in Bangalore compared to Chennai. Also, people there don’t spend on “mineral water cans” or Tanker for daily water usage! There is no need for an Aircon in Cool-ooru. The autowalas there are much much better and by and large charge as per meter! (Are Chennai politicians Listening!??!!)

One part of our mind feels like we should move back to Bengalooru , considering it’s a little more cool(in all sense) and lot of work options than Chennai!

Unconventional...

This weekend was very unconventional in many sense. We or rather S rose early both days of this weekend and we did lot of things over this weekend in addition to enjoying good afternoon naps as well (after a looooooong time!)

We visited 2 temples on a saturday early morning. That being Poornami, we headed to Adambakkam Bhuvaneswari amman temple. Its considered auspicious to visit the temple on a poornami day. (this temple was suggested by my office friend). We also visited the famous nanganallur anjaneyar temple and gobbled some hot/ghee pongal.

S had promised me to get a silk saree for my birthday! (I know the reason to shop this weekend doesnt sound that convincing, considering my bday is more than a month away). I did do some brain storming sessions with my lunch mates in office and had decided on going to Mokshaa for a silk saree purchase. When I proposed the same to the 2 important men in my life, it was immediately "VETO"ed by both :(
They didnt appreciate the idea of shopping for a traditional silk saree from an exclusive collection (unconventional)shop!
We finally bought a silk saree from old "Nalli". I am always a big fan of their collection. We tried to beat the T.Nagar crowd by starting early on Sunday morning and ended shopping peacefully(amidst taking the car -again unconventional of S ;) He hates driving on the crowded lanes and always doubts of finding a good parking lot!)
For a person who has shopped an umpteen times in T.nagar, a new find are the neat toilets in the side of Old Nalli shop. Well maintained by them! You can definitely try them if you happen to spend more time splurging or window shopping in that area ;) Nalli does have ample parking lot at the behind of the shop as well!
Another unconventional event was to eat in a not so often tried place for lunch. Its the "Woodlands" hotel in the beginning of Venkatnarayana road. As we were very hungry and had no energy and patience to wait for a seat in the crowded, more expensive HSB, we headed to this place. I recollected the visit to this place for a buffet dinner arranged for my friend's parents anniversary :) Their phulkas were too soft/hot and was accompanied with good side dishes(homely -less oily/spicy) as well!

If we happen to get up early more often ,we can look forward to more such unconventional weekends ;)

All that starts well, ends well :)

Spicy crackers.

I had checked out Suma's post on wholewheat crackers. I just tried to modify her ingredients a little by adding ajwain (as suggested) along with fresh ginger-chilli paste, hing powder, kasturi methi and ghee instead of butter. I had in my mind something like "Aliva".
It could be a little more soft. May be should try with more butter?? What makes the "Aliva" biscuits so soft ??!

Deriving Inspiration...

Inspired by my enthusiasm to bake, S decided to try something by himself !!!! I wondered how it would turn up ;). First of all to think S would even attempt to enter the kitchen on a weekend, is itself a distant dream and so on hearing that he wanted to try something , surprised me!

I made it very clear to him that he gathers all the ingredients at the beginning itself and not come and pester me again and again(as he often does when I ask him to prepare something when I am bored!)

Well, it was probably one of those days, when S was in a lighter mood and so he seemed quite excited to try this out. He hooked himself to his(or rather mine!) ipod and went about with the task of baking nankattai.

He followed the receipe verbatim and landed up preparing some small size balls of the dough he had prepared. Even though, I told him I would not come and disturb him, curiosity got the better of me and I went into the kitchen , only to see S put the small balls on the greased tray !

I told him we need to flatten the balls to get to the shape of the nankatai ! Without any remark, he gladly accepted (i wish he does this more often as he always questions me on everything ; although i must admit most of the time his questioning makes sense !)

Finally he got the tray completed and put it in the oven for baking ! It did turn out well for a first attempt. More so i took some of them over to my grandmother, uncle and aunt who were so thrilled to hear that it was made by the Son-in-law of the house and enjoyed the same.

Wish more of these attempts are made by S - at least i can see him a bit relaxed and enjoy doing something other than sleeping and sitting on the sofa on weekends !
Here goes the receipe of the same.
Ingredients:
Refined flour(seived) -1 1/2 cup
Powdered sugar - 3/4 cup
Ghee melted - 1/2 + 1/8 cup
Vanilla essence - 1/8 tsp
Method:
1. Grease the drip tray and keep aside
2. Mix together all the ingredients and form a soft dough
3. Divide the dough into equal portions and shape into balls
4. Place the balls on the drip tray.
5. Bake at 160c for 15 min or till the top is light brown in colour
6. Similarly bake the rest of the Nankatais. (S had doubt on this point ! ;))
7. Cool on the wire rack and store in an airtight container.(if anything remains ;))

Baking for this weekend....

Homemade Pav and bhaji inspired from Purnima's blog. Her measurements are perfect. I still will need to adjust the baking time based on my oven. I think I could have left the pav still more in the oven for a glazing golden brown top. There is always scope for improvement... ;)It was not very soft immediately , but with time it become more softer...
I also tried to make nankattai or butter cookies. Its a simplest I think for anyone to start with an oven. It can be be prepared in 15-20 min like our kesari which is made instantly when someone visits our home. :)

Relaxation - at the cost of whose effort?

I somehow managed to squeeze in time on a week day evening to visit a parlor. I have been thinking of getting a pedicure done for quite sometime now. It’s mainly for removing the dead cells and to get a good scrub done rather than for aesthetic reasons.

I was happily sipping a cup of hot tea and glancing through the pages of a women’s magazine. (I would have to accept that it’s the only place I read such magazines! I try to be a little girly girly). A pedicurist was holding my complete leg weight and was giving a good scrub/massage for my feet. She also attended to the minute details of my toe nails. In the middle of her work, she kindly enquired if I was done with my tea, I nodded- she got my cup and kept it safely and continued with her work!
Everytime I return from a parlour, I feel I should not go again for a pedicure. I can very well get my feet soaked on hot water tub with rock salt and vinegar on a daily basis to maintain it properly. For the past one year, I have been trying to put this routine into practice, but somewhere down the line I have been going completely out of track and the cycle of another visit to the pedicure specialist pops-up.

In the name of my mother...

Jun 9 is the birth date of my mother.

I felt it’s apt to remember my mother’s birthdate by writing about “Shanthanjali trust which was started in the remembrance of mother to do something from our end, for this society.

Father has got a website as well in which he shares to his well wishers informative articles on a monthly basis(18th of every month) and also uses that to keep everyone updated on the trust activities.

If you want to know more about the trust operations or would like to make any contributions, get in touch with us through this website.

My father had also started a blog in the memory of my mother and vented out his feelings on how he managed his first one year in this world without my mother. Currently, father has felt that he is destined to do more service to this world and trying to accept the harsh reality of my mother’s demise.

My mother’s motto has always been “Joy of living is through joy of serving!”

I am very proud to have got them as my parents.

Sand Temple

We revisited our childhood days when we used to go to the beach and play with the water, build tunnels :).
Today me and S decided to build a tunnel and see if we had the patience to do so. We were successful and able to connect with our hands!
We decided to decorate the tunnel with some sea shells.
I wish everyday is like today where we were so engrossed and didnt even think about the end of the weekend! :(

All Excited...

I am all excited about my new OTG of Morphy Richard (28ltr) in Chennai. I have to definitely thank S for driving on a peak Saturday evening to Adyar to buy the OTG.
I did the official inauguration of my OTG with my first baking receipe-Oaty Anzac cookies. If you wish to know the background behind the name of the cookies- refer the link above.
Here goes the receipe for the cookies..
Ingredients:
1 cup (90g) rolled oats
1 cup (150g) plain (all-purpose) flour
⅔ cups (150g) caster (superfine) sugar
¾ cup (60g) desiccated coconut
2 tablespoons golden syrup
125g butter
1 teaspoon bicarbonate of (baking) soda
2 tablespoons hot water
Procedure:
Preheat oven to 160°C (320ºF). Mix the oats, flour, sugar and coconut in a bowl. Place the golden syrup and butter in a saucepan over low heat and melt. Mix the bicarbonate of soda with the water and add to the butter mixture. Add to the dry ingredients and mix well. Place tablespoons of the mixture, leaving space between each one for spreading, onto baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper and flatten to about 7cm in diameter. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until a deep brown. Cool on trays for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely. Makes 28.

Today I had to used honey instead of golden syrup. Also, I used freshly grated cocunut instead of dessicated cocunt, as I could not get hold of either of these ingredients in my neighbourhood. This post goes as an entry to "Baking from the book" event. This is the first time I am sending an entry to such a blog event. I have also tried to take a photo of the front cover page of the book I had referred to prepare the same. This book was gifted by my husband while we were in Singapore. :)
I made paneer at home and also tried to prepare paneer tikka for dinner using my new OTG-grill option ! The paneer pieces had got broken when I tried to insert the skewer! I had finally put them directly in the grill tray and it ended up with lot of pieces getting stuck to the grill. :(
It have still a long way to go in grilling.... I think I should marinate the paneer and other vegetables in the freezer , so that the ingredients get hard and don’t break while using skewer??!!
I would be very happy to get inputs on how to use the OTG grill option for making good Tikkas?

Menu of the day..

You might be wondering why am I writing a hotel buffet menu here.
No - This was a heavenly home prepared food. The menu was part of my Chithi(mother's sister) 20th Anniversary celebration at home! All the above mentioned items were completely prepared at home by my Chithi for a big group of 22 adults for dinner!
Kudos to the energy and enthusiasm of her! It was a very delicious dinner served with lots of love. :)
Many more happy returns of their anniversary(May 20th) to my Chithi and Chithappa . I am a little late to write about this post..

Random..

This is a random post based on the events of this week..

I had been to Bommi's (my father’s house helper) wedding. She has been working in our house for the last 14 +years. I should say she is like my elder sister and very attached to us. Her entire family has helped us in all possible ways- be it during my sister’s full term of pregnancy or taking care of our father’s house after my mother’s demise! A very reliable person with a genuine smile all the time(however overwhelmed she is with work). My heartfelt prayers for a happy married life of her.

Women and shopping go together most of the times..

We like to spend long hours to take a look at different products/varieties available in the market and would like to make an informed decision. I have to accept that I have an amazing patience when it comes to shopping. ;) I prefer to shop alone most of the times , considering the amount of time I take to choose my dresses.

One of the week days, I started early from office and went to “Nalli” stores. I had gone to pick few sarees for my close relatives for different occasions in their families. I was very much reminded of my mother while doing the saree shopping. :(

She loves to take a look at the latest designs/variety be it saree or salwars and would pick always bright colors . The saree will not be very expensive actually and will not take long to do her purchase! As she was very fair, those color combination will go well on her. Even for us, she will never get sober colors. I have changed a little after wedding and tend to buy little sober colors in the name of elegant dressing (thanks to S!?).

When I was in my first job and was not married, we use to shop only for selected occasions like birthday (of our family), wedding anniversary(of parents) and Diwali. We were always asked by Amma to save for the future (for my wedding at that time) and never allowed to splurge on clothes ! :)
Nowadays, I shop for clothes, whenever I feel like and have no specific occasion in mind to buy for. Things have changed, but mother is not around for me to gift.

Vaanamae Ellai(Sky is the limit!)..

I recently got to interact closely with the cook at my father's house. She is a young lady in her late 20's , divorcee with a 13 year old son. Her son is studying in a veda patshala. He lost his eye in a fire cracker accident last Diwali and has got an artificial eye and managing with one eye on all his daily activities..

Inspite of all the hardships she is undergoing, she is very confident and carries herself well and has got a very high self-esteem! I admire this attitude of her( though I do feel at times she splashes money and tries to show off more than her level or capacity!)

I got to know that she has a dream to learn to drive a four wheeler and have her own car! So much of positive attitude and optimism.

I am reminded about the old Tamil movie "Vaanamae Ellai" of K.Balachander released when I was in my primary school. If you understand tamil, you will be able to appreciate this song very much for its lyrics.

To be frank, I am a little down today and not in the best of my moods!! I dont feel like discussing the reason for that here.!

Let's Dream Big- Sky is the limit(Vaanamae Ellai).
Let's not settle with our current state! We are destined for something much better!

Nannari Juice..

We had tried Nannari juice syrup of MTR 777 from a local store. Myself and S very much liked the taste.
Later, I got to see this blog post of Veggie platter with detailed procedure of Nannari lassi. I thought of giving it a try to make nannari syrup, as she made it sound quite simple!

Staying in Chennai, I got hold of the roots from a local medicinal shop(Nattu marundhu kadai) over the weekend. I had made the juice extract in a span of 3 days. We tried to make it like a regular juice, and have not tried the lassi combi mentioned by Veggie Platter.

This refreshing drink can be prepared by adding nannari syrup, lemon juice , water and ice cubes. Its a real thirst quencher. It almost goes with anything - be it Chinese noodles or our traditional rice sevai.

My father and S tried to arrive at the cost involved in making this nannari syrup. The MTR 777 brand of nanarri syrup of 700ml costed 90 bugs. We believe this would be only one-fourth of that or even less!! We are planning to replace the syrup next time with Organic sugar and try to reduce the sugar content by 1:2.5 instead of 1:3 as mentioned in the original receipe..

Going steady in 50's..

This post is about spending 50 years together with a beloved soul partner and making it sound as if marraige and living together is not that difficult. My personal opinion is that the tolerance levels and adjustment factor from the wife's side was on the higher side in those days. I am not sure if they would have really had any arguments with their counterparts for even serious stuff while we young couples fight for silly stuff like shoe to buy or as simple as dinner options etc..

We were part of a surprise get-together for celebrating the 50th wedding anniversary of S's aunt and uncle(fondly called by all as Baluappa and Bhunamma). It was natural precious moments to see the trembling hands of S's uncle trying to cut the cake and he getting impatient as the candle light wasn't heeding to his soft blows and then used his hand instead.

In the same lines, I am also remembered of the a big get-together we had for my grandfather(late) and grandmother, who celebrated their 50years of marriage in Tirupathi some years back with special poojas in the temple.

Will we younger generation ever get to celebrate this BIG event in our lives?? I am not trying to be pessimistic. Its considering the fact that we get married only in our 20's or early 30's and considering our stressful lives, the probability is a little less.

Tale of two Laila's..

I am a little late to write about this recent severe cyclonic storm...

Even though, Laila didnt cross Tamilnadu coast, it brought a huge spell of rain in most of the places of Tamilnadu. While we common people, crib about the lousy drainage system provided by our TN govt, what will be the thoughts running in the minds of the kith and kin of the TN CM and his family while using the roads during the rains. Who will they blame???! (Disclaimer: I am not pro or against any political party in TN or India. I am just trying to highlight the public problems and wish at the corner of the heart that some action is taken for that soon)

These rains again expose the poor water drainage system we have in Chennai. I wish our TN Deputy minister who has made frequent trips to Singapore, try to bring in a drainage system in TN as good as the one in Singapore. In addition to adopting the Singapore river model to clean up the polluted Cooum river and also getting inputs to build a Financial district as in Singapore.

The name "Laila" transports my memory back to my final year engineering college days. As I had little bit of face feature resemblance of Laila (Tamil Film Actress), some of my college mates used to address me with that name. Though I was not very happy to be addressed with that name, I very much liked the actress performance in "Ullam Ketkumae" released in 2005.

Akshaya Tritiya

The word "Akshaya" means the never diminishing in Sanskrit and the day is believed to bring good luck and success. It is belived that if you do a charity on this day you will be blessed and will receive blessings many fold. Nowdays jewellers have turned the purity into a marketing gimmick. The day is particularly considered auspicious for starting new ventures. (Source : Wikipedia)

Some more additional information I got are given below
Akshaya Triti1 and Akshaya Triti2(Tamil) . Its informative to read these articles and know the significance of the day.

I am a little late on writing about this day's significance .. It would be nice to do some bit of charity today, Instead of following the mad crowd by standing in front of the jewellery shop to take delivery of our already purchased gold item.

I dont feel good to give money to any begging person in the streets. Rather try to feed needy people. A small act like this will be good for us and the society around. MIL mentioned to buy 1kg Rice , Sugar and Salt and pray in front of GOD and give it to someone and also try to feed someone's stomach. If you dont believe in HIM, you can just do the buy and give part.

From my side, As the vegetable tray of our fridge was almost empty, I tried to feed our building watchman with a simple lemon/curd rice today for lunch. This is the usual routine I try as far as possible, to prepare more quantity than required and give to our building watchman or our helper rather than giving away the left overs to them. You will feel so satisfied to see the person eat the hot food you have prepared and thank you for that. I have purchased Rice/Salt/Sugar. I will try to find someone to give that..

See what you can do to brighten up someone's face..

3B's- Beach..Ball...Bhel

What more fun can you have on a hot sunny Saturday evening than by enjoying an action filled get-together with this 3B Combo... This is quite contrast to last friday when I was down with a terrible back pain. I think my body asked me to slow down a little as I had over done my quota of exercises. But, that Friday helped to recover ,relax myself and be a happy host for a BIG group! Try to see if you can get the exact number of people from the picture below ;)

Yeah, I think this is the first ever dinner we have hosted with soo many people around. Our guests where all my hubby's Aunt , uncle, cousins and their extended families.

It was fun to play cricket in the beach sand and struggle to run from one stump to another followed by a round of bhel puri session and some more running to digest the bhel and make room in the tummy for a sumptous potlock dinner.....

The evening came to an end with me getting an Ace :( ,  after a few rounds of Spade(Card Game) with 11 ppl playing in a single deck of cards !

Young at heart..

We have been influenced by western world and go about talking of our age with each passing year and get the feeling of growing older in mind and body...

I was pleasantly surprised when a very sweet gentleman , my landlady’s father , Dr.K.S in his eighties asked us “how young are you these days?” when noting down the age in my medical prescription. Yes! This (young at heart ) doctor is still practicing medicine with a small clinic setup in his house itself and has no problem in remembering the medicines for different illness and calls his patients in person frequently to get update of their progress and gets the fees only when the patient is cured completely.

In the same lines, recently saw K.Balachander, M.S.Viswanathan in their late 70’s and early 80’s respectively in TV shows, full of energy and they looked quite young as well. We can’t really tell their age. I had actually googled to know their year of birth.

Hats off to them –such people should be our source of inspiration...

I want to watch the recently released “Rettai Suzhi” tamil movie in which K.B and Bharathiraja have acted.

Nivedhitha

My unborn child’s name... She should have come to this world by this week…
She has made me realize that life is always not as expected and accept life as it comes.

It has made me accept that there is always a reason for everything we undergo. This
event has made me a little more stronger emotionally…Though, I do break down to my closed ones at times and wish at the corner of my heart that everything had gone smooth for me, by being patient and accepted all the medicines/painful injections and be on absolute bed rest to have had HER…

It’s a learning for me to take care even more of my health, slow down and be empathetic/compassionate to people around and their problems.. I have started to take up classes with Dwi for strengthening my pelvic floor and core muscles of my body. I had been a little irregular for the past couple of weeks on my exercise schedule. I am sure SHE will help me stay focused on what is important for my life and achieves that through sustainability.

Kerala weekend trip

For a person from a typical tamil iyer family, i was pleasantly surprised to attend a very simple, sweet wedding of a malayalee family friend’s in a small village close to Palakad. A total contrast to a typical iyer family wedding, which is anywhere between 1.5 to 3 days, this wedding was simple for 2 reasons- the people were quite simple and warm and the wedding procedure is hardly for 10 min . The total duration the bridegroom's family would have spent in the marriage hall would be less than 4 hrs! The bridegroom’s family had made their own arrangement for transportation for the wedding! The bride literally walked empty handed(like a saying in tamil- kattina pudhavai’yoda) in her bridal silk saree with jewels holding the bridegroom hands(like cinema). All the essentials she will need during her stay would have been purchased by the bridegroom’s family beforehand.

I have to definitely mention the sweet dishes in the sadya (marriage lunch), as i had gobbled 3 glasses of them during my lunch ;). There were two kinds of Pradhaman- one was with Milk called as "Palada pradhaman " and other one called as "Parippu pradhaman" was based on moong dhal and cocunut milk.

Just a little about kerala climate- I felt Chennai climate was far better ! It was 42C heat and the frequent power failures made it a little difficult to enjoy the mango, jackfruit, tender coconut and banana trees around. It was very calm and quite peaceful. There was a heavy shower with lightning during the night. Which was very much a blessing for us. But, that happiness didn’t last for long –as there was a complete blackout due to the rain!

Some learning in this trip is that you have to wash and eat a raw mango. Immediately on plucking the mango from the tree, it will have milk secretions, which will irritate our skin. I have some scar in my chin as a result of that. :(

We did see few multi-storeyed apartments in palakad. One of the multi-storeyed which we visited on our return to the station to meet another family friend was next to Palakad Town South police station. It seems it has won the second best ASIA’s police station award.

Grown up…….

I suddently felt this way today. I am sure many will be surprised seeing this statement from a 28 year old married me!

Yeah, this might sound silly for many, but I am very proud about the “grown-up” feeling after a lot of activities for/along with my father during an one day trip from Chennai to Mumbai..

The activities include deciding/packing dress for my father to taking care of all travel arrangements right from booking tickets/transportation, to handling cash/baggages, to brief father with the new process/procedures in the airport/flight, to ensure he gets what might suit his tastes, by giving suggestions on the new food choices, which we youngsters are spoiled to(like café choices to chat items to north Indian/Chinese food etc..), to handling valuables, to taking care of the smallest of smallest things for father at the time he requires, to overall ensuring he doesn’t feel the absence of amma!

Though I have to admit that here and there my childlike attitude showed up in this trip, overall I felt grown up as I took complete responsibility over the travel like how parents used to do those old days for us.

Though, the reason for this short Mumbai trip of yesterday(Apr 8,2010) is not at all relevant at this post context, I would like to give a short update on that as well to add some masala to this post ;) (at the cost of my cousin's! hope she doesnt mind that ;)). Had been for attending my cousin’s wedding! Yes- my (first uncle's first daughter) cousin has got married-similar to Two States book storyline. Ok, let me not get into personal details. I shall respect the personal space and privacy of others in my family. If you are inquisitive to know more about this, drop me a note , at my own discretion will give full updates of the nice rituals of a different style wedding which I attended with nice colorful photos ;)

This post transports my memory back down to my childhood days when we were traveling as a happy family of 4 on one of our travels to Mumbai(Bombay then) in a second class bogie of the train. Ok, for those who dont know about the 4 of us I am referring here is-its my sweet parents and my elder sister. Back those days, I used to hate my sister for being very studious and disciplined kid and feel she is deciding my measurement /benchmark levels in all activities- be it at home, relatives , neighbours and the school teachers! They always said "Are you R's sister!!??" . Hope you would have got what those people had tried to hint by those statements. But, you see I never felt or took those words seriously. I shall try to recollect my memories of childhood days with R-making my life miserable with her grades and behavior. ;) - OK, let me not deviate now on this. One more topic added to write about in my blog.

It was a summer vacation trip and those days one doesn’t get disposable water pet bottles(lesser carbon footprint) and hence people used to carry their own water cans. That was the time, we had upgraded from 2ltr water carboy to a water cooler can so as to not drink hot water in spite of getting ice cold water in our carboy(thanks to the scotching heat felt inside a second class compartment).. Actually, that water cooler was gifted by one of my mother's maternal side relative. My sincere thanks to him ! I still cant recollect the long relationship thread of that person to my mother and how I should actually address him in terms of the relationship. But, he is still very close to me and our family and I am still in touch with them considering all our hectic lifestyles and chasing dreams. :)

My parents were busy arranging our luggages in the space below the lower berth and checking our seating arrangment. The official inauguration of the cooler by elders(my parents) had still not happened. I had resisted the temptation on not trying my hands on to the new water cooler right from when it was cleant and filled with ice –cold water at my relative’s residence by my mother or sister(cant remember). The water was meant to last for 1 complete day of our mumbai-chennai trip, if its over before our trip, we will refill in any of the big railway station taps (But, now immediately on entering a hotel,as a health conscious person, I order for a mineral water as if I was born with one) . I was the official porter of the 3-4 ltr water cooler that day. I was instructed by my parents that we can take water from it only after we enter the train.

I was very inquisitive those days that anything new comes I will want to explore that completely (even if exploring results in breaking the object handled). As I follow the instructions of my parents to the word, the moment we entered our bogie in the train, I rushed to use the portable water cooler can to get a glass of water(even though I wasnot at all thirsty).

I opened the tap of the cooler to get a glass of water.Later, water started to overflow out of the small glass and there was a miny size river water flowing in our bogie, making our bogie floor water stagnated due to the slant train floors and our luggages also got wet.

You could have guessed what would have happened after that.

I currently feel like a grown-up daughter. :)

Travelogue-Kanyakumari,TamilNadu,India

Here is a travelogue of our recent visit to the southern most tip of India,Kanyakumari and places in and around that.

As we decided last minute to take off combining a weekend, we couldn’t get train ticket booking directly from Chennai to KK. We had booked to tirunelveli in Ananthapuri and had thought of taking a bus to KK. We got to know from our close relative who is a retired railway employee that we can get down at nagerkoil and take a connecting passenger which goes to KK from there. I used a passenger train for the first time as far as my memory goes. It cost only 3Rs per head(!!). Less than 5Rs still has some value here! We actually reached KK around 10am much earlier than what we anticipated . It was perfect for our hotel checkin at 10am. We didn’t expect much from TTDC hotel Tamilnadu. But, it was a pretty decent hotel and we got a seaview first floor hotel room. As we had the whole of morning at our disposal, we decided to venture out in the hot sun by going to thiruparapoor falls and boating. Though, the water flow didn’t look that great, we liked the boating very much. It did help us to cool down a little(temperament wise) and to test the falls. As we had luggage to take care,S first offered to look after them while I enjoyed the falls and vice versa. The water force was good and had a good natural massage of our head and back J. On our return, we stopped at Susindram anjaneyar temple. It’s a 15ft tall anjaneyar statue and a very old temple. I got irritated with commercialization by the temple priests that if you offer oil lamps/ Betel garland whatever you wish will come true!! I have stopped believing in all that and feel heart felt prayers are good enough and we will definitely get what we deserve. As we still had time for sunset, we headed back to the hotel and freshened up a little and then went to the viewing tower close to the beach. We had to pay a nominal entrance fee to use the viewing tower to get a superb view of the sangamam of Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal and to enjoy the beautiful sunset from there. I feel the natural occurrence of Sun finishing his day duty in one part of the world and proceeding to duty in another part of world has been made commercial by we “MAN”! The ocean makes as realize that we are just mortals!! We headed to see the Kanyakumari amman in Bhagavathi amman Temple and rested after a long day!

The day-2 of our trip started with a beautiful sunrise, visiting Vivekananda rock and 133ft tiruvallur statue in the sea! The Vivekananda rock and tiruvallur statue is open between 8 am and 4pm only. There was a long queue to take the first boat trip to visit these places! We managed to get there on time after a heavy breakfast in Hotel Tamilnadu. Next, we headed to Tiruchendur(Lord Muruga). Its again a seashore temple. The coastal route from KK to Tiruchendur doesn’t have very frequent bus services and taking a longer route of KK to tirunelveli and tirunelveli to Tiruchendur would take a lot of time. As we wanted to save time we hired a taxi to drop us in Tiruchendur. The journey was peaceful with little stop overs for Tender Cocunut water and Nattu Vazhaipazham(a type of banana with lots of fiber content! If anyone happen to know the English name of this banana variety, do let me know!). I was reminded of my childhood days in Tuticorin, where my father used to buy this almost everyday! It’s quite sweet Banana and helps to reduce the heat in the body and to help for good bowel movements. We understand that Tiruchendur temple is open from early morning till 9pm in the night. We managed to reach there before lunch and had a good darshan. Again, this temple has also become very commercialized with priests trying to get make ppl use the special darshan! As the crowd was less and we didn’t feel like paying money and having a shortcut darshan of Lord, we waited in dharma darshan queue and had a good peaceful darshan. We saw a 80 year old man celebrating his birthday along with his entire family called “Sadhabishekkam” in the temple premises. We also got blessings from the elderly couple. I always admire any old couple. I don’t want to get into details, I feel the attachment shared at young age in a husband and wife is quite different to that shared by old couple. We headed straight to Spicnagar(the place I was born and brought up till my tenth) after a good south indian meal at “Hotel Mani Iyer”. The hotel was suggested by our taxi driver and I felt it was worth for 50 INR per meal.

In evening, headed to show the places I grew up to S. I was not very happy about the roads and maintanence of plants there, as I knew how the town-ship was earlier. I could feel the shutdown of SPIC plant being reflected in their maintanence of the township! But, S liked them as he has not seen many townships before. I took him to my school and went to all floors of the building. As it was late evening, could not find a single teacher who had taught me. Then, went to Officer’s club-which is a nice place with good indoor games facilty. Played a round of Table tennis and met the caretaker whom I knew since my childhood .We also visited the hospital where I was born and also had a good darshan at Balambigai Temple. As my friend in office told, I had lots of “Autographs” running in my mind while visiting each and every place .The irony is when I was there in SPIC during my school days, I felt that to be first class jail. We were in a very protected environment and felt I had not got much of outside exposure. Now, when I went there, after almost fifteen years, I feel if we could settle down in such a calm place with office and home closeby and all amenities within the reach! I wish some point in my life, I get to be in a much calm quiet place unlike the tier-1 cities I have lived so far! Myself and S always have a discussion about not being in a city during childhood. We feel there are many advantages about not being in a city. Being a township, helped me to grow without much peer pressure and not too much of exposure to outside world. I found it a little difficult to adjust to attitude and mentality of city brought up kids once I moved to Chennai. I feel the discipline and attitude which I developed being in a township has helped me to be more focused on education and not distracted by other less important stuff!

We got up early the next day to visit my father’s native place Kalakad and visit the temples there. We hired a taxi for the whole day,as we wanted to cover more places. We used NH7 to reach Nanguneri. My father’s village Kalakad is quite close to Nanguneri and took a small diversion from NH7 to reach there. We first visited the “Periya Koil” of Kalakad. To know more about the history about this village check out this site. The temple closes by 9:30 am. Hence, we had a quick darshan and headed to my father’s family diety “Darma Sastha” temple. Went to see my grandfather’s house which is on rent now. Things have changed for the good and so is my grandfather’s house. It has now got a closed toilet/bathroom. I have never ever stayed in that house for the reason that it didn’t have a toilet! We used to use another house which had a neat toilet facility whenever we visit my grandfather’s house. They happened to be my father’s distant relative and my marriage alliance got clicked as they were also related to S family, and vouched more about our family and me! “Marriages are made in ……“.:) We went next to meet that common relative who is currently put up in another village called “Pathai”. That family still holds lot of land and does rice cultivation in their lands. He was giving us updates about the new modern techniques in farming etc and as I being interested in organic farming, was getting his opinion on organic farming etc. From his talks, I gather that the middle men are making lot of money in getting goods to market from the farmers! I wish my dream of getting quality organic food stuff with right price is available for everyone everywhere is realized soon if more and more farmers get into organic farming and realize that they are not polluting the land and environment. I wish more awareness is obtained among consumers as well about the benefits of organic farming for own health.  We proceeded next to visit my maternal grandfather's village or rather the village where they bought a house and settled for long. My maternal grandfather(late) came to this village called "Ariyanayakipuram" , located in the banks of "Thamirabarani" river close to Tirunelveli as a Headmaster for a Tamilnadu government school in 1970's. Even now, we, his grandchildren are called "Headmaster (paethi)grandchild" by the village people :). It was nice to chat with a few of the old ladies of my grandmother's buddies and to see the huge house (with almost 30-40 windows) which was till very recent times my grandfather's(late). I was happy taking S around in that house and recollecting some of the old fond memories of that house :). We headed next to "Nellaiappar" temple in Tirunelveli. Its a huge temple and maintained decently well.  We were happy that we were able to cover most of the places as planned and now headed to the tirunelveli station to catch the train. We stopped over in "Central cafe" hotel which is very close to the station. This places serves good tiffin and coffee!
